The Insurrection in Mesopotamia, 1920
Reprint of Lieutenant General Sir Aylmer Haldane's "The Insurrection
in Mesopotamia, 1920". First published in 1922, this is the
story of the revolt of Shite Muslims in Iraq during the summer
and fall of 1920. The author, commander of the IV Corps on the
Western Front for three years, was both the military and civil
head of British forces in Iraq and Persia. When the revolt broke
out in May 1920 at Tel Afar, he was faced with 130,000 armed men
against a very small British and Indian Army garrison. His successes
have been noted by British and American commanders currently serving
in that country. There are chapters on the relief operations at
Raumaithah, Kufah, and Samawah and other combat operations at
Hellah and Dwaniyah plus much more. Of particular importance is
the background of the revolt, factors which still impact Iraq
today, and the conclusions he presents for warfare in that country.

Thin Green Line
The History of the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC 1922-2001 by Richard
Doherty. Formed out of the Royal Irish Constabulary at the time
of Partition, the RUC's history is predictably a turbulent one
right through to its replacement in 2001 by the Police Service
of Northern Ireland. Few police forces in the world have suffered
so grievously as the RUC and this book is a fitting memorial to
the sacrifices made in the interests of the civil population it
was determined to protect. Throughout its history, it not only
had to perform normal police duties but contain the ever present
IRA threat. Hardbound, 300 pages, illus.

The War of The Running Dogs
Malaya 1948-1960 by David Donovan. In 1948 war returned to Malaya.
The Chinese-backed guerrillas called it the War of the Running
Dogs - their contemptuous term for those in Malaya who remained
loyal to the British. The British Government referred to this
bloody and costly struggle as the 'Malayan Emergency'. Yet it
was a war that lasted twelve years and cost thousands of lives
before a victory on British terms. Here are the planters and their
wives on their remote rubber estates, the policemen, the generals
and the soldiers, the Malays, Chinese and Indians of a polyglot
country, all fighting an astute, ruthless, and well organized
enemy. Softcover, 336 pages, photos.

Vietnam ANZACs Australian & New Zealand Troops in
Vietnam 196272 by Kevin Lyles. Osprey Elite 103 covers the
'Diggers' and 'Kiwis', among the most effective and professional
troops involved. Drawing upon the ANZACs' long experience in the
jungles of South East Asia, the men of the Task Force used their
expertise in patrol tactics to great effect. Meanwhile the ANZACs'
small and isolated adviser teams (the AATTV) spent ten years passing
on their skills all over South Vietnam, and in the process four
were awarded the supreme decoration for valour - the Victoria
Cross. This book pays tribute to their military prowess, and describes
and illustrates their uniforms and equipment - evolution from
early Australian issue, through evaluation of mixed US/ANZAC gear,
to development of new ANZAC items. Softbound, 64 pages, illus.

Afghanistan: The Bear Trap. The Defeat of a Superpower
by Brig. (Retd.) Mohammed Yousaf with Mark Adkin. This highly
controversial book reveals one of the greatest military, political
and financial secrets of recent times. It is the true, if fantastic,
account of how Pakistan and the USA covertly controlled the largest
guerrilla war of the 20th Century, dealing the Soviets in Afghanistan
a military defeat that has come to be called 'Russia's Vietnam'.
From 1983 to 1987 the author, Brigadier Yousaf, headed the Afghan
Bureau of Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI-akin to the
CIA), and as such was effectively the Mujahideen's commander-in-chief.
He is the only general since the Second World War to have directed
troops in action within the Soviet Union's own borders. Never
published in the USA, the last remaining copies of the original
1992 UK hardcover edition were snapped up by US intelligence.

The Battle of the Casbah by General Paul Aussaresses.
No French army officer had ever spoken up in such detail on the
subject of torture during the bloody 8 year conflict (1954-1962)
that led to Algeria's independence until this book. General Aussaresses
decided to break the silence and reveal the bitter truth of the
war on terrorism as the French army fought it in the late 1950s.
While many, including François Mitterand, who was the Interior
and, later, Justice Minister (and future President of France),
knew and approved of torture and summary executions in Algeria
between 1954 and 1962, the extent of the French government's involvement
and that of its official representatives on the spot in Algiers
was unknown until now. General Aussaresses had an excellent military
record during World War II with the Free French forces and commanded
the 11th Shock Battalion in French Indochina prior to his service
in Algeria. This book was a sensational bestseller in France and
has been featured on 60 Minutes, as well as the subject of articles
in Soldier of Fortune and GQ. Hardbound, 185 pages, photos

of the most brutal conflicts Africa has ever suffered, a classic

RUNNING RECON
A Photo Journey with SOG Special Ops Along the Ho Chi Minh Trail
by Frank Greco.
A combination memoir and combat photography book, Running Recon
reflects both the author's experiences in the top-secret Studies
and Observation Group (SOG) from April 1969 to April 1970, and
the collective experiences of SOG veterans in general. What sets
it apart from other Vietnam books is the more than 700 photographs,
many never before published, from the author's personal collection
and those of his fellow SOG veterans. Frank Greco had these photos
because after running recon with Command and Control Central (CCC)
for eight months, he was put in charge of CCC's photo lab at Kontum.
His duties included developing photos taken by the teams on their
cross-border missions and taking photos on aerial reconnaissance
missions. When a fire destroyed the lab during his last days in
Vietnam, he rescued hundreds of photos, and when he returned to
the States in 1970 he brought them home. If he had not, they would
have been destroyed by government order in 1972 when SOG was disbanded,
and an irreplaceable historic resource would have been lost forever.
Through these photos, firsthand accounts by SOG veterans and now
declassified top-secret documents, Greco shows what it was like
to run highly classified, extremely dangerous cross-border recon
missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail into Laos and Cambodia. Color
maps marked with operations and locations help readers follow
the action of the CCC recon teams and the larger Hatchet Forces.
New details and photos of SOG's best known mission, Operation
Tailwind, are also included. Running Recon is sure to to appeal
to anyone with an interest in SOG, the Vietnam War, special operations
or military history in general. Hardcover, 458 pages, 700+ photos,
color maps.

Randall Military Models
Fighters, Bowies and Full Tang Knives by Robert E. Hunt. Bob Hunt's
first book, Randall Fighting Knives in Wartime, provided him the
opportunity for further study. In his second book, Hunt continues
the process of identifying, describing and dating fighting knives
produced in the dramatic early days of the Randall experience.
This new volume provides a vast amount of material, carefully
organized and presented to enable the reader to further his own
research in the areas most interesting to him.
SECTION 1...The model 1 fighter has been around for 60 years and
the design and makers name are well recognized. Section 1 includes
photos of a number of rare all-purpose fighting knives.
SECTION 2...The oldest style of personal protection knife influencing
Western civilization has been the double-edged type...a stabbing
knife. This section features some of these knives and the "standardized"
design adopted by Randall; periodically modified in order to satisfy
the requirements of the time.
SECTION 3...Recognition is given in this section to several models
developed during the span of years when troops were sent to Southeast
Asia, as these knives are inseperable from this conflict.
SECTION 4...The heart of this book is the section on "carried
knives" which features Randalls thaat have at least one of
the several distinguishing requirements qualifying it to be considered
a military model used in wartime. This section includes more than
twenty-five examples, most never-before-photographed, that will
introduce (to many for the first time) the attraction of the "used"
knife.
SECTION 5...The Bowie knife was all but forgotten when the movie
industry revived interest with Alan Ladd's The Iron Mistress.
Recognizing that some of these models were carried in combat,
we approach this section with that view in mind and represent
the several distinct types that Randall created with a historical
theme.
SECTION 6...Visual comparisons serve in aiding us to learn more
about the subtleties in the development stages and evolution of
the knives that we collect. In this section, pairings appear without
their sheaths, providing a better image of the knives depicted.
This presentation allows the reader an opportunity to observe
and compare knives on their own, in various pairs, sets and groups
of like models.
SECTION 7...In the eyes of some, the sheath makes the knife. Ask
any collector; without the one, the other will be reduced in value.
Therefore, we have included a section on sheaths that should be
instructive and serve to better illustrate the points of reference
made in the general text of the book. Hardbound, 304 pages (including
150 full color).Available FALL 2004

About Face by the late Col. David H. Hackworth. From
a highly decorated captain In Korea to youngest full colonel in
Vietnam, Hackworth was one of the masters of infantry war. By
the early 1970s he had become thoroughly disgusted with the military
establishment and the misguided US effort in Vietnam. This is
a no punches pulled story of his military career. The reviewer
in SOF said, "If you thought your library of contemporary
military literature was complete, think again. About Face may
well become the most important book to come out of the Vietnam
generation, and it should certainly become the standard text for
those who give a damn about soldiering and soldiers". 875

Black Book of Communism. Crimes, Terror, Repression
ed. by Mark Kramer and Stephane Courtois. International bestseller
uses recently opened archives in the former Soviet bloc to reveal
the actual accomplishments of Communism around the world: terror,
torture, famine, mass deportations, and massacres. First comprehensive
attempt to catalogue and analyze the crimes of Communism in detail
over seventy years. Communism always leads to crime, terror and
repression, whether in China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba under
Castro, Ethiopia, Neto, and Afghanistan. Not only is the death
toll staggering-as many as 25 million in the former Soviet Union,
65 million in China, 1.7 million in Cambodia, but there has been
equal devastation to national cultural resources in those countries.
The 20th century was most characterized by mass government violence
and Communism is its most dangerous form. Hardbound, 1100 pages,
photos.
